Tinker (When this enters the battlefield, you may put a +1/+1 or charge counter on an artifact you control, or put a 1/1 colorless Thopter artifact creature with flying onto the battlefield.)Here is the previous discussion thread for Tinker.Use this topic for talking about Tinker in general. If you have a concern that you feel warrants a new thread - for example, one that involves multiple mechanics at once, or is particularly noteworthy such as proposing a significantly different version of the mechanic - make a new thread for it. Otherwise, please use this thread. Tinker is meant to represent ingenuity, innovation, and continual change and improvement. Current discussion is about whether Tinker needs to be keyworded, or it if could be part of a subtheme.

Here's just a mix of common colored noncreature staple spells with riders to test Tinker in feel but not as a strict keyword. The goal is to increase the as-fan/potential synergies of the counters and tokens we're working with, and to promote the feeling of progress and momentum.
Airborne Backup 2W Sorcery Gain 4 life. Put a 1/1 Thopter artifact creature token with flying onto the battlefield. - Due Diligence 3U Instant Draw 2 cards. You may put a work counter on target artifact.
House Arrest 2U Enchantment - Aura Enchant Creature When ~ enters the battlefield, put a 1/1 Thopter artifact creature token with flying onto the battlefield. Tap a Thopter you control: Tap enchanted creature. - Junkyard Scuffle 1BB Sorcery As an additional cost to cast ~, tap a creature you control and put a +1/+1 counter on it. Destroy target nonartifact creature. - Blow Fuse 1R Sorcery ~ deals 4 damage to target creature. You may put a work counter on target artifact.
Runner's Cloak 1R Enchantment - Aura Enchant creature you control Enchanted creature can't be blocked by creatures with flying. When enchanted creature attacks, put a Canister artifact token onto the battlefield with "On your turn, sacrifice this: Untap target permanent." - AEther Harvest 2G Instant Destroy target artifact or enchantment. Put a Canister artifact token onto the battlefield with "On your turn, sacrifice this: Untap target permanent."
Naturally Resourceful 1G Sorcery As an additional cost to cast ~, tap a creature you control and put a +1/+1 counter on it. Search your library for a basic land card. Put that card onto the battlefield and shuffle your library.

Right now Tinker keyworded ability with three modes. That's an awful lot. Two modes is a lot, but three modes is probably too many.
Here's a proposal to get the words down. It's clearly not as powerful, but it makes it a two mode ability instead of a three. Also still needs slight wordsmithing.
Tinker (Put a counter of the same type on an artifact you control with a counter on it or put a 1/1 Thopter artifact creature token with flying onto the battlefield.)
In my opinion, you're better off with either that or splitting off the Thopter ability to be it's own ability.

Masticon, we've been discussing your last proposal lately - the idea of just splitting off the abilities into their own cycles. Not a mechanic, just a theme of the set that appears at all rarities. (Kinda like Processors, in a way?)
Pasteur, those are some nice commons. Why 'work' counters? A charge counter would be more synergistic with previous cards in Magic history, no?

Charge counters are definitely more synergistic with Magic's history. They're a nice, generic catchall that have shown up a lot in the previous artifact blocks. For that reason we may want to end up using them.
Part of the reason I'm using "work counters" here is flavor - to disassociate "the artifacts you see on Kaladesh" from "the artifacts you'll see on every other plane, especially Mirrodin". It may not sell, and we may want it to be specifically backwards compatible, but I think we might be able to show the "more labor, less magic" approach with a few words switched. The other reason is just not to confuse with the mechanic Charge, for now/in playtests. Charge counters on artifacts and a 1UU counterspell with Charge could start to get confusing!

Here's a few ideas that work with the current incarnation of Tinker. One issue I see is the +1/+1 counter or charge counter aren't really as good as a 1/1 flier in most circumstances. Also, the charge counter isn't as good as the +1/+1 counter the vast majority of the time. This means we need to scale for the 1/1 flier even though the rest of the ability is pretty cool and could be much less costly to create synergy. As it is, tinker cards will be picked up in draft because 1/1 fliers are solid making any synergy much more difficult to achieve.
I haven't given these cards inspired names. Just basic ones.
Aspiring Technomancer 1U Creature - Human Artificer 1/1 When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, Tinker. - Endless Preparation 4UU Sorcery Tinker Tinker Tinker If you think you can make it better, don’t stop. - Dark Alchemist 2B Creature - Human Artificer 2/2 Sacrifice Another Creature: Tinker. The best discoveries come at a cost. - Explosive Conception 3R Sorcery Deal 3 damage to target creature. Tinker. - Battle Technician 3R Creature - Human Artificer 2/3 Whenever an artifact creature enters the battlefield under your control, it gains +2/+0 and haste. - Thing that Hates Artifacts 2G Creature - Beast 2/2 Whenever an artifact enters the battlefield under your opponent’s control, put a +1/+1 counter on CARDNAME. - Automated Repair Bot 1 Artifact Creature - Artificer 1/1 Sacrifice CARDNAME: Tinker. - Frontline Repair Shop Land T: Add 1 to your mana pool. 3, T, Sacrifice Frontline Repair Shop: Tinker.

Battle Technician is really nice. Great design.
The others are interesting and show the nice ways we can riff on Tinker, but don't particularly excite me. Tinker seems like a mechanics that plays better than it reads.
