Automation {COST}: {Effect}. If this is the third time you activated this ability this turn, automate it. (If this isn't automated, put a charge counter on it and it becomes automated. At the beginning of your upkeep, if this is automated, you may activate its ability without paying its mana cost.)
This came out of the thread for natural magic but the flavor no longer fits that.

I was thinking of different ways to do this that don't use counters or transform to track it.
Auto Pinger 2R Creature - human wizard 1R: CARD deals 1 damage to each opponent. If this is the third time this ability has resolved this turn put an artifact token onto the battlefield named Automation. At the beginning of your upkeep you may tap an untapped Automation token you control, if you do CARD deals 1 damage to each opponent. 2/3
This can combo with things that want artifact tokens but not in a mana efficient way. (I think the inefficiency is good here) When you play a new auto creature you can use existing automation tokens on your next upkeep. Bad flavor (what is this artifact?) Do we want some sort of generic "Tools" artifact token that different creatures can tap in order to use? Automation being just one way to make and use them. Do we want those tools to be called contraptions?

I like the idea. Reminiscent of the Inner-Flame Igniter cycle, but with a payoff for future turns. I agree it seems fun to be able to use the Contraptions / Automata from one card with another one, although that does constrain us a bit in how diverse a range of costs we can give the abilities.
(However we phrase it does need to bear in mind that it might be given other abilities, by Burning Anger or Diviner's Wand or whatever.)
