Battle-Forged (At end of combat, if this creature attacked this turn and has less than N +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)Here is the link to the previous discussion thread on Battle-Forged.Use this topic for talking about Battle-Forged in general. If you have a concern that you feel warrants a new thread - for example, one that involves multiple mechanics at once, or is particularly noteworthy such as proposing a significantly different version of the mechanic - make a new thread for it. Otherwise, please use this thread. Battle-Forged is meant to represent progress and continual improvement in an interactive way, and nothing is more meaningfully interactive than combat. Currently we're discussing whether Battle-Forged should have a name change or not, and whether it flavorfully fits Tesla.

Battle-Forged mechanically shows advancement, but the current flavor for Battle-Forged isn't on theme with Kaladesh. And right now it only build counters for attacking. What if the trigger were changed slightly to allow for brader use?
[on creatures] AEtherstudy N (Whenever this permanent becomes tapped, if it has less than N +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)
[On noncreature artifacts] AEtherstudy N (Whenever this permanent becomes tapped, if it has less than N charge counters on it, put a charge counter on it.)
We have a lot of mechanics, so forgive me if this version has already been suggested. The trigger is similar to Surge. It works well with Charge canisters tokens and enables Natural's "3rd time's the charm" effect.
Counterconsul Spy (UNC) 2U Creature - Human Rogue 1/1 AEtherstudy 2 (Whenever this permanent becomes tapped, if it has less than two +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.) T: Target creature with power 2 or less can't be blocked this turn. U: Counterconsul Spy can't be blocked this turn if its power is 2 or less.
Viewer Cube (UNC) 3 Artifact AEtherstudy 3 (Whenever this permanent becomes tapped, if it has less than three charge counters on it, put a charge counter on it.) X, T: Scry X. X can't be greater than the number on charge counters on Viewer Cube.
The problem is getting the counter right away though. I mean, these Commons doesn't scan as too attactive, even though I think they'll play well.
Canister Hauler (COM) 3R Creature - Ogre Warrior 2/2 AEtherstudy 2 (Whenever this permanent becomes tapped, if it has less than two +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)
AEther Glider (COM) 2B Creature - Human Artificer 0/1 AEtherstudy 2 (Whenever this permanent becomes tapped, if it has less than two +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.) Flying AEthir Glider can't block.

Intentional that I have to tap Viewer Cube for 0 the first time?

I don't know, man. I didn't even think about it.

I appreciate the honesty, nich. I like the idea of aetherstudy but it runs into the problems of Tommy's suggestion of Battle-forged, where the creature gets bigger as it attacks, thus making the bodies less appealing. It certainly plays better with charge canisters and other themes of the set that seem to be developing.

Reminds me of the Theros ordeals. I hope the higher rarity creatures can get some "When this attacks, if it has power 3 or greater ...". Overall I think it is fine but I am not excited by this mechanic, I am a little more interested if we have some Abzan style "counters matter"

Inspired wasn't very popular, but we could steal it's become untapped tech:
Elementalist's Chamber (UNCOM) 2 1, T: If there are three or more charge counters on Elementalist's Chamber, remove them all and put a 3/3 green Elemental artifact creature token onto the battlefield. AEtherstudy 3 (Whenever this permanent becomes untapped, if it has less than three charge counters on it, put a charge counter on it.)
AEthertech Marshal (UNCOM) 1W Creature - Human Soldier 1/1 Whenever this creature attacks, if it has two or fewer +1/+1 counters on it, tap target creature defending player controls. AEtherstudy 3 (Whenever this permanent becomes untapped, if it has less than two +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)

The problem with Inspired is the huge amount of risk involved in hoping it survives long enough to untap.

I prefer the when tapped version over the when untapped version simply due to the need to either start with a counter or tap it once with no effect. For creatures you could use the untapped version, increase power and toughness by 1 and decrease Aetherstudy by 1 for a pretty similar effect but adding counter text to other stuff is akward.. Something kind of flashy for Aetherstudy:
Boom Cannon Wall (RARE) 4R Creature - Wall Defender Aetherstudy 3 RR, T: CARDNAME deals damage equal to it's power to target creature or player. 0/5

I couldn't think of a useful common artifact with Ætherstudy, so my playtest (pushed from last weekend to this weekend) uses a version that only goes on creatures. I think the "trigger at untap" version" looks very attractive. It's the only mechanic that has gotten pre-playtest positive reaction. And while it's true that the risk is them dying before powering up, the promise is a slightly above curve creature if you pull it off. Here's what I'll be trying out, along with some enablers I've included in the card pool:
Æther Mixer 1B Creature — Human Rogue 1/1 Deathtouch Ætherstudy 2 (Whenever this creature becomes untapped, if it has less than two +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)
Spite Fumer 2B Creature — Human Rogue 2/2 1B, T: Another target creature gains menace until end of turn. Ætherstudy 2 (Whenever this creature becomes untapped, if it has less than two +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)
Filigree Etcher 2RR Creature — Human Artificer 2/2 Prowess Ætherstudy 2 (Whenever this creature becomes untapped, if it has less than two +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)
Rage Fumer 1R Creature — Human Artificer 1/1 1R, T: Another target creature gains haste until end of turn. Ætherstudy 2 (Whenever this creature becomes untapped, if it has less than two +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)
Smoke Bomber R Creature — Goblin 0/1 Whenever Smoke Bomber attacks, target creature can’t block this turn. Ætherstudy 2 (Whenever this creature becomes untapped, if it has less than two +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)
Acidaxe Logger 1GG Creature — Giant 2/3 Ætherstudy 3 (Whenever this creature becomes untapped, if it has less than three +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.) Chemical Farmer 2G Creature — Elf Druid 1/1 T: Add G to your mana pool. Ætherstudy 2 (Whenever this creature becomes untapped, if it has less than two +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.) Might Fumer 3G Creature — Giant Artificer 3/3 1G, T: Another target creature gains trample until end of turn. Ætherstudy 2 (Whenever this creature becomes untapped, if it has less than two +1/+1 counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)
Blackbook Research 2B Instant Remove all +1/+1 counters from target creature. Draw that many cards and lose that much life.
Fracture Tester 2R Creature — Human Artificer 3/2 Whenever a creature you control dies, if it had a +1/+1 counter on it, Fracture Tester deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
Remix the Æther 1G Instant Remove all +1/+1 counters from target creature you control. Until end of turn, target creature gets +2/+2 for each +1/+1 counter removed this way and gains trample.

Do let me know how it goes. I think Inspired is a mechanic with a lot of potential that was executed poorly. Hopefully this goes better.

Gonna add a few Renown cards as potential replacement for Battle-Forged.

Been considering the flavor of Battle-Forged, and I think the idea of 'Repute' would be nice. Battle-forged has an issue with its flavor in that Kaladesh doesn't seem very wartorn, and battles don't seem common - but small scuffles and conflicts between dissidents and the Consul could be a lot more common. Repute would represent the measure of infamy that these creatures get by repeatedly fighting - and surviving - the Consul.
It also helps since in my upcoming playtest I've moved Battle-Forged to be primary Black and Red, and secondary Green, so the shift in flavor makes this coloring more sensible.
